Oldham’s youth inclusion project (YIP) ended their summer activities by putting something back into the community, after working hard making bird boxes and hanging baskets for elderly residents in the alexandra ward of Oldham.
Young people aged 10 to 13 attended the programme at the Children’s society in Holts and Alt in conjunction with Groundwork which aims to engage young people in positive activities benefiting the community holiday period.
The YIP ran six sessions providing young people with materials to make bird boxes and hanging baskets for their neighbours.
Orla McGinn from Oldham’s Youth Inclusion Project said; ‘This activity was the young peoples idea they wanted to put something back into the community, and do something to brighten the area up.’
‘They worked really hard making the boxes and baskets and the residents were really pleased with them.’
Later that week the group planned a late lunch and bingo session for elderly first choice homes residents who live nearby. The young people assigned themselves jobs, and organised this event themselves, such as sandwich making, bingo caller and waitress.
The elderly residents really enjoyed the day, and the bird boxes and hanging baskets were given out as prizes- the young people even carried these back to their homes.
‘Although activities produced great results for the residents the young people really got a lot out of these activities. And it was great for elderly residents to see the young people doing something good for them.’
