E-gov Services On The Buses

Highway to Opportunities (H2O) (a recently established company incorporating Opportunities for Women, Routes to Employment and the Oldham Adult Careers Guidance Service) has been awarded a UfI (University for Industry) contract to pilot e-government websites. The organisation is delivering an awareness raising and access programme across its range of innovative projects. These initiatives take services to the heart of communities and engage residents who might not otherwise be aware of access opportunities.

The idea of the pilot is to raise awareness and offer access to two e–gov sites to as many people as possible in the Oldham area, particularly those who are not likely to find out about the sites in other ways.

The Direct Government web site - www.direct.gov.uk is a web portal bringing national and regional services through to local people. For example:

  • You can apply for a driving licence
  • Book a theory driving test
  • Apply for a passport
  • Order an E111 insurance form for travelling in Europe

and much more at a push of a few buttons.

This pilot programme will raise awareness of the site’s potential ready for an enhanced interactive service in 2006.

The Careers North West web site - www.careersnorthwest.com is a web site designed to make looking for the perfect career easier, for example:

  • You can use the Career Profile Builder
  • Upload your CV
  • Use the Career Matchmaker
  • Carry out a job search

and much more.

H2O is using its two double decker buses to offer access to these websites in the community and help residents to use them. Look out for the Asian women’s double decker bus in Glodwick, Coppice, Werneth, Westwood, Clarksfield and the NDC Bus which is touring Fitton Hill and Hathershaw. Currently the NDC bus is parked in the Fitton Hill Arms car park and will be moving to Northcroft on 11th July.

The websites will also be able to be accessed at the H2O base and Adult Careers Guidance offices in Brunswick Square and the former Routes to Employment base in St Chads - Limehurst Village.

So if you wish to find out information on Employment, Education and Learning, Childcare, Money, Caring for someone, Health and Wellbeing Motoring and Travel, Transport or a host of other topics, hop onto one of the buses or call at Brunswick Square or St Chads.

Trained staff will welcome you and show you how to get on line. Contact Rebecca Dean on 0161 628 9294 if you wish to find out further details.
