Footballing glory for Connexions Oldham

Positive Steps Oldham’s athletic employees continued their grip on the national Connexions 5-a-side football tournament by bringing home the trophy for the third time in 5 years this weekend.

A total of 24 employee’s travelled over to Doncaster on Saturday 21st June, making up two men’s’ and one women’s’ team.

They competed against 30 other Connexions teams in the group stages including local rivals Doncaster, Leeds and Bradford before the A team progressed on to the quarter finals beating Nord Anglia Lifetime Development 7-2.

The semi finals saw Oldham’s Connexions beat Sheffield 2-1 and then emerge victorious against Bradford 3-2 in the final showdown.

New team captain Anthony Sever said ‘To be the first organisation to have retained the trophy for over 10 years is brilliant, and testament to the whole squad who showed amazing character to overcome an early loss in the group stages.’

Connexions Director of Education Steve Murphy also featured in the winning team and commented ‘Every year the standard seems to be much higher, and features more games so to bring the trophy back to Oldham was extra special.’

As Oldham has won this for the second successive year it will be their turn to organise and host the national Connexions tournament for 2009.
