Healthy happy children are on the menu at Oldham’s Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) after the school achieved their Healthy Schools Status.
The achievement marks 2 years of working towards the status, and shows the schools commitment to healthy outcomes for their pupils.
Oldham Healthy School coordinator Linda Devlin Said "Achieving this award demonstrates that the PRU places the health and wellbeing of pupils as highly important. They use the healthy school standards as a mechanism for school improvement and this helps them to identify how they can continue to develop as a health promoting environment in the future. Congratulations!"
Recent work towards the status has seen the school develop a range of policies programmes, and activities which have benefited the pupils physical and emotional wellbeing,
‘Being a healthy school is much more than healthy eating ’ Explains Linda, ‘It involves a whole school approach, involving pupils, parents, staff and external agencies focussing on key areas, including physical and emotional health, both of which directly contribute to positive behaviour, positive attitudes and performance
‘We have set up a range of activities and clubs to help pupil’s lead healthy lives’ Explains Marion Bunn, Healthy Schools Lead for PRU. ‘We now have a vast array of sports clubs- something for everyone, as well as outdoor activities such as teambuilding exercises. Pupils are sent postcards home for good behaviour, when they collect 10 they get a reward. We also have a hero of the week for outstanding performance and a parenting group that meet every week for support.’
‘Working towards the Healthy Schools status really made a difference to pupils behaviour and attendance- in the last year alone attendance has improved 10% .’ The Healthy Schools programme is delivered by Positive Steps Oldham, for more information contact 0161 621 9300
