A new programme has been launched in Oldham this month aimed at reducing unemployment levels in the borough.
The programme, ‘Passport to Employment’ will be delivered by The Oldham College, Highway to Opportunities (H2O), and Groundwork, and aims to support jobless residents into sustainable employment through;
- · Intensive work with currently unemployed residents. ·
- Improving resident’s employability through increasing skills base.
- · Encouraging employers to recruit local people that are currently out of work.
‘We’ll be aiming to work with those adults in the borough that are facing the greatest challenges in returning to work, helping them to overcome these hurdles and offering continuous support back into the workplace.’ Explains Jayne Entwistle, H2O Director.
Those on the programme can benefit from training in a variety of vocational areas, such as food hygiene, health and safety, or construction. As well training each person can also gain from;
- A basic skills assessment
- A personalised Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) worker.
- Access to numeracy and literacy qualifications where necessary.
- Seminars on CV writing, application forms and interview skills.
- ‘Meet the professionals’ sessions where residents get the chance to meet with professionals for various sectors.
“The recent experience of recruitment to the new Tesco store in Failsworth shows that with the right support package people can make the transition back into satisfying employment. We want to build on this and work with a range of employers in Oldham” Comments Carl Morrison, Adult and Community Education Manager from The Oldham College.
Once employment has been secured clients will benefit from on going support, advice and guidance from Highway to Opportunities.
