Oldham celebrate one of lowest drug related death rates in the country

Oldham Drug and Alcohol Action Team have welcomed the news that the borough now has one of the lowest drug related death rates in the North West, and England.

A report for the International Centre for Drug Policy at the University of London has found that Oldham had 1.76 deaths per 100,000 in the past year, significantly lower than the 5 per 100,0000 in England and Wales.

“Over the past two years we have implemented a prevention and harm reduction strategy across Oldham, which aims to minimise drug related harm caused to individuals and communities. These latest figures regarding drug related deaths suggest that this strategy is working.” Comments Kay French, DAAT Strategy Manager.

“This year The Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) continued to commission drug overdose prevention training, which all drugs workers and clients have had access to. In addition to this, waiting times for treatment are down, and numbers in treatment are up, which shows we are moving in the right direction. As a partnership we will continue our work to deliver drug and alcohol training and prevention services across Oldham.”
