Over 80 delegates recently attended Oldham’s first ‘Emotional Health and Wellbeing conference’ hosted by the Oldham Healthy Schools team.
The conference aimed to support schools to develop the emotional health and wellbeing of their children and staff, one of the key strands of the Healthy Schools programme.
Christine Thomson, from Oldham Healthy Schools team said “97% of Oldham Schools are participating in the National Healthy Schools Programme, a key feature of which focuses on emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people.
"This event provided schools with information on local provision and the opportunity to discuss their individual school needs with supporting agencies and each other
‘Supporting young peoples’ emotional health and wellbeing is important because its widely recognised that this can have a direct impact on their academic achievements and their confidence and self esteem. It can be as basic as developing an anti bullying policy in school to a school council- ensuring pupil voice is heard, all these things contribute to a pupils emotional health and wellbeing
‘One of the highlights of the day was a presentation by pupils of Limeside Primary who described and sang about the care and support they receive in school. They talked confidently about how they are encouraged to be enquiring, independent learners.’
This event brought together agencies in Oldham that work with young people and also encouraged schools to share best practice.
Other speakers at the event included staff from Children & Adolescent Mental Health Services, Grange School and Oldham council.
The day also provided opportunities for round table discussions and afternoon workshops.
