Oldhams childminders boost their IT skills

back to news and projects

Oldham's child minders have boosted their IT skills after completing a free IT training programme sepcially designed to help them use new laptops they were given last year.

The training was took place at Highway to Opportunities, who deliver the Learndirect contact for Oldham.

It aimed to encourage childminders to make the most of the free laptops they were given last year, using them for word processing, spreadsheets, internet and e mail.

'This course was designed specifically with these child minders in mind' explains Louise Day, Learndirect Team Manager.

'It was a 12 hour, six week programme which covered basic areas of computer use such as file management, word processing and e mail.'

Julie Bowers participated in the course and comments 'I am currently doing a foundation degree in Leadership, Education and Practice, and struggled with my first assignment being on the computer, but since doing this course both myself and my tutor have noticed a real improvement on the way I have set things out. As well as this I now understand how to do other basic things on the computer which should make things easier with my job.'

Louise concludes 'If you have never been shown how to do things on the computer it can seem quite daunting and take you ages, but there are a number of courses you can do with Learndirect which make this a lot easier. You can learn at your own pace, and with the complete support of your Learndirect tutor.'
