Play highlights teenage issues
Teenage parenthood, relationships and sexual health were the issues raised by a drama taken into secondary schools across Oldham.
"Love and Lullabies" written by Mike Harris, has been performed to more than 3000 year 9 pupils by GW Theatre Company in the last month. The Mossley based company has a track record of delivering thought-provoking and entertaining plays about pressing social issues to young people - and this was no different.
The tour, which ended at Crompton House School, Shaw, was a tremendous success. Dave Jones of GW Theatre said: "This is not a hit-and-run approach where the theatre company puts on a play which raises lots of questions and then moves on without addressing them. The play is a catalyst for further and ongoing work in schools and is welcomed by staff and enjoyed by pupils".
Performances have been funded through the Government's teenage pregnancy strategy fund which is managed and co-ordinated in Oldham by Positive Steps.
This year GW Theatre has been able to call upon the skills of Rouksana Kauser, from Key to the Door, an organisation that supports and works with young parents in Oldham. She performed as one of four and was able to discuss with young people the impact of becoming a parent at such a young age.
