School's DVD Is All About Experience

School's DVD Is All About Experience

Oldham Connexions has produced a new DVD which follows Kaskenmoor pupils as they carry out work experience around the borough. It aims to show pupils what to expect and other places featured include a garage, Oldham Sports Centre and Millstream Animal Centre.

The project has been funded by Kaskenmoor School and Positive Steps Oldham, which runs the Connexions advice and guidance service for Oldham young people. Adele Fraser, a Connexions Personal Adviser at Kaskenmoor School said: "We wanted to take young people into the workplace, to show them what it is like and take away the fear of the unknown. The result is very professional and it is hoped that the DVD will be used by schools around the borough. Although the pupils were nervous, they did a really good job. Thanks should also go to the businesses for the work that they do with young people because it is not easy to take someone on placement".

Kaskenmoor pupil Beth Wilson spent a week working on the Oldham Chronicle sports desk, and attended a Kick Racism Out Of Football event as well as writing stories. She was mentored by Kevin Richardson, Deputy Sports Editor, who said, "It is great to have young people on work experience and show them what the job is about. Even if they do not take up a career in journalism, we are always delighted to help because it is a valuable experience".
