Teens urged to quit their habit this week

Wednesday 10th March is National Stop Smoking Day, and young people in   Oldham are being encouraged to access free support services aimed at helping them quit smoking.

The Centre Health Team, based at Connexions Oldham offer a complete stop smoking service to young people which includes, individual assessments, access to a range of nicotine replacement therapies, weekly prescriptions and ongoing support.

Janette Butterworth from The Centre Health Team commented 'Giving up smoking can be hard at any age, but as a specialised young peoples service we'll work with clients to develop a stop smoking package that's right for them, and continue to support them for as long as they need. It's important to seize the moment if you are thinking of quitting, come and see us, you don't need an appointment and we are open late nights and Saturdays.'

The Centre Health team operates on a drop in basis so no appointment is necessary, and are also open until 7.00pm Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday with a Saturday opening from 10.00-2.00pm.

'As well as the obvious health benefits to stopping smoking you'll be surprised at how much money you can save, if you smoke just five cigarettes a day you be spending over £40 per month and £474 per year on cigarettes. If you have a 20 a day habit you'll be spending £158 a month and a staggering £1898 a year…just think what you can do with that money.'

Facts:

  •  Approximately 450 young people start smoking every day
  • Half of smokers who smoke in their teens and continue to smoke, will eventually be killed by their smoking habit
  • A smoker who starts at 15 is three more times likely to develop lung cancer than someone who starts at 25
