Local employment charity Highway to Opportunities (H2O) were visited by Helen Milner, Managing Director, and Julie Mitchell North West Regional Manager of UK Online last week. H20 host a UK Online Centre in Oldham, which provides local residents with free access to the internet as well as various courses.
‘The visit was organised to give Helen the chance to see a local centre in action, and also see how we are getting on with various projects, including the Home Access Pilot which looks at providing local young people and parents with laptops.’ Explains Jayne Entwistle, Director, H2O
‘UK Online is all about making computers and internet access more accessible and we have a number of projects coming up where we’ll be aiming to take UK Online out to Oldham’s communities, and make I.T more accessible for everyone.’
‘At H2O we have specially adapted double decker buses which tour Oldham’s communities and have full I.T equipment on them, which was something they were really impressed with.’
The visitors then met with two clients Michael Cuthbert, and Barbara Hanratty both of whom have enrolled on the My Guide courses offered by UK Online. Barbara commented; ‘the courses I have done have been really beneficial to me, and the staff have been really supportive and helpful.’
My Guide Courses are available for anyone starting out with using computers, they cover specific areas relating to your interest for example, how to save you money using the internet and keeping your children safe online.
‘In today’s climate it’s more important than ever that people are up-skilling themselves where possible to give them the best chance possible to get into work or further education’ concludes Jayne.
