Young People Do their Bit for the Environment
Young people in Hathershaw & Fitton Hill are spending some of their summer holidays doing their bit for the environment.
As part of the summer holiday activities in the NDC area, Oldham Youth Inclusion Project (YIP) has been running successful 'Themed' weeks with the young people, focussing on different topics such as health and sport, culture and arts and, music.
This week they are focusing on 'Community & the Environment' and their aim is to put something back into the community and learn new skills.
To mark the week the young people have been ·
- learning about recycling at the Alternative Technology Centre ·
- Taken part in clean up activities and litter picks across Hathershaw & Fitton Hill in an attempt to clean up the area. ·
- Tried their hands at gardening, bench making and planter building. ·
- Made up shoeboxes of essentials such as toys and toiletries, and wrote letters for refugee children and young people in Romania and Croatia, as part of The Rotary Shoebox scheme
The project has worked in partnership with Groundwork and the young people have come up with all the ideas for the week themselves and have also planned and organised all the activities within a very small budget.
Fitton Hill Yip Project Manager Andrea Taylor said “The themed weeks have worked fantastically well and all the young people have enjoyed the programme. This week the young people wanted to put something back into their own community by getting involved in litter picks, street cleans and gardening. The young people have been really positive about this project and everyone is really proud of all the hard work they have put in”
To celebrate the weeks success the young people have organised a presentation event at Groundwork’s Office on Shaw Road on Friday 17th August between 2.30pm and 4.30pm with Greenacres YIP, who have also delivered the same project in their own area.
The event will applaud the young people for their hard work and commitment during the week and will be an opportunity for them to showcase their work through photographs and a presentation.
But the work doesn’t stop there the young people will continue the environment theme with an ongoing maintenance project over the next few months.
The aim of this work is to include young people in the community, raise awareness of important environmental issues and promote the positive input that young people can have in their areas
