Young Rappers Take To The Airwaves

Young Oldham rappers were featured on BBC Radio Four last night.

The 30-minute programme "The Learning Curve" looks at all aspects of education from early years to university and night schools, with host Libby Purves. The last series featured a Learning and Skills Development Agency competition to find young songwriters to write lyrics on issues that matter to teenagers.

The winners were seven young people from an inclusion project for teenagers run by Oldham Youth Offending Team, and they appeared on radio last night with Chris Claydon, the project co-ordinator, to talk to Libby. Kayd, a member of the winning group spoke about their song, a rap called "Young and Oldham", which is about growing up in the borough and the problems that teenagers face.

It was also played to Libby and her guests who praised its well thought out lyrics. Chris Claydon also described how the project uses various strategies to help teenagers out of trouble and into numeracy and literacy in an informal educational way, such as rap, a motoring project "On the Right Track" and a girl's magazine.

The Oldham Youth Offending Team is managed by Positive Steps Oldham.
