Young people in Oldham received an insight into what it is like to work for a top radio station when they spent a day at Key 103 producing podcasts and conducting interviews.
The trip was part of a project delivered by Positive Steps Oldham, aimed at engaging with young people from Asian communities, and helping them explore their culture, religion and identity.
'The day out was targeted to young female Muslims from the Coppice area of Oldham, and involved spending time understanding their different cultures, the issues raised in the media today relating to religion and the multiple roles young people can play in today's society.' explained Young Peoples Engagement Officer, Shofique Ullah.
A highlight of the day was conducting recorded phone interviews with local MPs Phil Woolas and Michael Meacher which were also reproduced as podcasts. 'Interviewing the MPs over the phone was nerve-wracking, but they were very friendly.' commented Ayesha Begam, one of the young people.
'It was important for the young people to be able to produce something about their culture and the place it has in society rather than replicate something else. By conducting interviews with local MPs and looking at existing media footage of programmes such as Question Time, they were able to explore their religion, as well as media portrayals of this, and how things may differ.'
In total three podcasts were produced which will now go across various partner websites. The project was funded by PAYP - Positive Activities for Young People.
