Youths get their message across in anti-social row

Oldham youngsters have given their own verdict on Tony Blair's Respect crusade in a new survey.

Young people, questioned by guidance service Connexions, said giving them more facilities to use and a greater say would help tackle anti-social behaviour.

Access to dancing music and drama were among the surprise requests by more than 100 people, aged 13 to 25 across the Greater Manchester area. Harmut Kretz, Greater Manchester Connexions Youth Involvement Manager said: "The overwhelming message which came from this consultation is that young people want to be empowered to shape local services, perhaps accessing local youth councils, forums or advisory boards - or by contacting local MP's and councillors".

The survey was to aid the government bid to make the next generation more socially-active citizens. Youngsters were consulted during workshops, with many keen to become volunteers in the community.
