Year 9 pupils at St Augustines were given a first class insight into their futures today when their school arranged a 'Raising Aspirations and Role Models Session Day'
The day was organised in partnership with Connexions, and involved addressing stereotyping, gender, race and equality with regards to careers.
It also provided pupils with a real life insight into the working world as a few surprise guests turned up. Members of the local community and ex pupils arrived and gave brief presentations on their chosen careers. This included company directors, a local nurse, and ex pupils who have now carved out successful careers in Oldham.
The pupils were then able to ask questions and find out more about careers that interest them. 'The sessions were arranged for pupils to get a real insight in to what they might need if they wanted to pursue these career paths. 'Explains Joanna Billington, Connexions Personal Adviser.
'Pupils find it much easier to take on board what they are told about jobs if its coming from people in those roles themselves. Meeting people they may already know, but seeing them in a professional capacity can get them thinking that this achievable for them too.'
'The day was about raising aspirations, and providing pupils with role models they can identify with and this event did just that.'
